So You’re Pregnant. Now What?

Finding out you're pregnant is exciting, but it can also feel overwhelming. This post walks you through six essential steps to take after discovering you're expecting.
Positive Pregnancy Test

So you just found out you’re pregnant, and now you’re wondering… what’s next? First things first – take a deep breath and smile! You’re about to embark on one of the most incredible journeys of your life. Becoming a mama is a beautiful experience, but it can also feel overwhelming as you start to think about everything you need to do.

Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered! Here are six essential steps to take after finding out you’re pregnant.

1. Think About How to Share the News

One of the most exciting moments of early pregnancy is sharing the news with your partner and loved ones. How you do it is entirely up to you! When I found out, I printed out a “Dad to Be” mug and placed the positive pregnancy test inside. (No surprise, he never actually used the mug to drink from – it’s now a permanent keepsake on display!) If you and your partner have fun traditions, incorporate them! For example, if you do pizza Fridays, writing “We’re Pregnant!” on the inside of the pizza box could be a fun surprise. Whatever you choose, be prepared for tears of joy, hugs, and in my case, a champagne pop (my husband momentarily forgot that I wouldn’t be drinking for a while!).

2. Schedule Your First Prenatal Appointment

Now that the initial excitement has settled, it’s time to schedule your first prenatal appointment. Your healthcare provider will usually see you between 6 to 8 weeks of pregnancy, but it’s a good idea to call early to secure a date and time that work for you. Depending on where you live, some doctors can be booked out for weeks, so calling earlier can ensure you find a convenient timing! When choosing a doctor, try to pick someone you feel comfortable with. Remember, if after your first appointment you don’t feel a connection with your provider, it’s okay to switch! This is your journey, and it’s a long one, you deserve a care team that makes you feel comfortable and understood. This is also a good time to start writing down any questions you have so you can bring them up during your visit.

3. Watch out for Certain Foods and Drinks

It’s no secret that what you eat plays a big role in supporting your baby’s development, and there are some foods and drinks to be mindful of. Avoid alcohol (yes, including that champagne!), raw meats, and unpasteurized dairy. It’s recommended to limit caffeine, and certain fish high in mercury should also be avoided. If you’re unsure about anything, your healthcare provider is your best resource. When in doubt, just ask!

4. Explore Available Resources

Take some time to look into the pregnancy and parenting resources available in your area. From doulas to prenatal classes, there are many services that can make your pregnancy journey smoother. If you have friends or family members who have been through this before, ask them for recommendations. Finding a strong support system and the right resources early on can make a huge difference in how you experience your pregnancy.

5. Check your Skincare and Makeup Products

Many skincare and beauty products contain ingredients that should be avoided during pregnancy, such as retinol. If you’re not sure what’s safe, check with your healthcare provider. A good rule of thumb is to opt for gentle, pregnancy-safe alternatives. And don’t forget sunscreen! Your skin can become extra sensitive during pregnancy, so keeping it protected and moisturized is key.

6. Take Care of YOU

Perhaps the most important step of all – prioritize your well-being! Pregnancy can be exhausting both physically and emotionally, so listen to your body. Stay hydrated, eat nourishing foods, and try to stay active in ways that feel good to you. If morning sickness hits, keep some salty snacks on hand to help manage nausea (it usually passes, so hang in there, mama!). Rest when you need to – your body is working hard to grow your little one! It’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions, from excitement to anxiety. If you ever feel overwhelmed, talk to a trusted friend, practice mindfulness, or consider booking a call with an empowerment coach for extra support.
