Motherhood is often described as the most rewarding journey in life—but it is also one of the most misunderstood. Behind every smile and every milestone lies a story of sacrifice, strength, and silent battles. For mothers of children with special needs, those battles can feel even heavier, yet their love and resilience shine the brightest. In this heartfelt piece, Bushra, a devoted mom, shares her journey of finding beauty in the little victories and reminds us all of the strength hidden in a mother’s heart.
I remember someone once asked me, ‘But what do you really do all day?’ I smiled, but inside my heart broke. If only they knew—the endless, unseen things a mother does. From the sleepless nights to the constant worries, it’s a full time job that never ends. Especially for mothers of children with special needs, the weight is even heavier. We give everything, often leaving ourselves behind, becoming invisible in the process.
A Mother’s Journey of Love and Strength
Salam Alaikum, I’m Bushra—a full-time mom to a wonderful son with special needs (ASD). His silence speaks volumes. Yet, in that silence, I’ve learned to hear love in new ways. His little gestures, a warm hug, a tiny smile fill my heart with gratitude. This isn’t about the grand achievements the world notices and applauds. It’s about the small, precious victories that only a mother’s heart truly sees: the first lingering eye contact that lasts a little longer, a single word spoken after months of silence, or the excited sound he makes when he spots something sweet, like ice cream.
Rediscovering Myself
I pour my heart into everything I do for him, yet I never forget that I am also a wife, and I deserve to feel confident and take care of myself. It took me time to realise that caring for myself is not selfish—it’s necessary. When I feel whole, I can give more love, more patience, and more strength to my family.
To Every Mother Who Feels Unseen
To all the mothers who feel unseen and invisible—this is for you. You are beautiful, capable, and extraordinary in everything you do. Life can be physically and emotionally challenging, as mine is—from waking up early, managing daily therapies for my son, preparing countless meals for my picky eater, and everything in between. There are moments of exhaustion, yes, but also endless moments of love that make it all worthwhile. Yet, life is beautiful, and we are here to live it fully, in the way God has gifted us.
You Matter Too
This is for the mothers who sometimes lose themselves in the process. You are the true heroes of your home; nothing is possible without you. Remember to recharge—prioritise yourself, eat healthy, exercise, dress up, put on makeup, and take care of yourself. Even the smallest act of self-care can light up your spirit and remind you that you matter too. Life will continue, but you only live once. The world may not understand, but a mother does. Live your life fully, without guilt. You deserve it.
Holding Onto Hope: A Message for Every Mom
Remember—you are the heartbeat of your home, the silent hero of your family. Keep loving, keep shining. Even on the hardest days, hold onto hope. Your love makes a difference.
